Key for Bears is solving Trojans' defense

By Rusty Simmons, Chronicle Staff Writer

Coaches from both Cal and USC, quarterfinal opponents today in the Pac-10 tournament, say it's too late in the season to change what has worked for their teams.

Goods leads Stanford over Oregon State 03.11.09
Hiring of Kakazu gives Giants presence in Japan 03.11.09
Sanchez helps Puerto Rico to WBC victory 03.11.09
Of course, when playing each other, that has meant drastically different things.

USC won the first meeting, 73-62 on Jan. 31, using a focused perimeter defense that limited Patrick Christopher, Jerome Randle and Theo Robertson to a combined 20 points on 7-of-23 shooting.

Cal won the most-recent matchup, 81-78 on Feb. 26, getting 54 points from the trio on 16-of-34 shooting.

Trojans coach Tim Floyd is a specialist at using the triangle-and-two or the box-and-one defenses to erase a player or two from the opponent. He does similar things on offense, seeking to isolate a player who has an obvious advantage.

In January, he shut down the Bears' guards, correctly gambling that even career nights from posts Jamal Boykin and Jordan Wilkes would not result in a Cal victory. In February, Christopher precisely darted off screens to get touches and had his way against every defensive set that USC tried.

"Their ability to execute, their ability to screen and their ability to cut are as good as anybody in this league," Floyd said.

"We don't know anything new," Cal coach Mike Montgomery said. "It's not like there's this daily entourage of information that is being supplied.

"We're going to have to be prepared to handle their toughness, their intensity and their physicality."

That may be the one sure thing. Third-seeded Cal (22-9) has already locked up an NCAA Tournament berth, but sixth-seeded USC (18-12) probably needs to win the conference tournament to get a bid.

No. 6 seeds are 2-11 in the Pac-10 tournament, having lost seven consecutive times. USC, however, has fared well, advancing to the tournament championship three times in the last seven years.

"They definitely need to win this game, and I know they'll be ready to play because their backs are against the wall," Randle said. "We need to bring our 'A' game because they'll bring their 'A-plus' game."

Moving Nightmares - Scout Relocation

Leah Casey was living a dream. An empty dream. When we met her last month, she had been waiting two weeks for her belongings.

"We have been waiting," she said. "We've been waiting."

Casey was waiting -- and worrying -- because movers held her belongings hostage.

"They said, 'Ma'am, you owe us 14,500 dollars,'" she said. "I was in disbelief."

The mover demanded 14 thousand dollars, even though they signed a binding contract for just 21 hundred dollars.

"That sounded like a great deal," said Casey.

The mover refused to deliver anything until she paid the new price in full -- and in cash. We wanted to know why the price suddenly went up. Our sister station, KTVU-TV, paid a visit to Leah's movers, Scout Relocation of San Jose, California. The company refused to answer any questions. Now, state regulators there are now investigating.

So how can this happen? If you've got a signed contract promising you a certain price, how can a moving company just raise it and hold your items ransom until you pay? 7 On Your Side found out, it can happen because the law does little to stop it.

The Texas Department of Transportation regulates movers.

"That happens. It's not good. Very -- it's just not, not good at all," said Robert Anderson, TXDOT's interim head of motor carrier regulation.

Anderson admitted, there is no law stopping a moving company from holding onto your belongings, indefinitely, in a payment dispute.

"That's right. You're absolutely right," he said. "There's nothing that we can do to actually stop, prevent, or force that."

The police can't help you either.

"There's really not much we can do for them, because in a situation like that, it is a civil matter," said Sgt. Richard Stresing with the Austin Police Department.

Texas law says moving disputes must be settled in court, but that can take months.

"It's a form of extortion," said Sgt. Stresing, "but the way the legislature has written the laws on theft, there has to be something else to it other than the extortion -- the holding of the property because of a civil contract."

We asked TXDOT if consumers deserve more protection. After all, we're talking about all your belongings here. Anderson said no.

"We're not the ones who made the decision for the mover [customer]," he said. "This is a contract dispute. It's a contract dispute that must be handled by the courts."

According to the Southwest Movers Association, these kinds of moving nightmares are common.

"This is the kind of thing that we fight with on a daily basis," said SMA's president, John Esparza.

Esparza suggested filing a theft report with the police anyway. File it where the items were first picked up. Next, file a complaint with TXDOT, although, again, the agency's powers are limited.

"We don't have the enforcement power to go out there and grab the guy and shake him and you know, and actually, physically do anything," said TXDOT's Anderson.

If it's an out-of-state move, you have more options. Contact the US Department of Transportation. The feds have more leeway to force movers to deliver your items, but they can only intervene on interstate moves.

Since Leah Casey moved from California, she got the feds involved. Her belongings finally arrived the day we met her.

"I can't wait to break out the cuisinart and have the whole family sitting down, on a couch, not on the concrete floor," she told us as the moving van arrived.

But much of the furniture was damaged. Boxes full of valuables were crushed, and casey said, several items have permanent marker all over them.

"I think that once everything's settled, you know, whatever damage is on there, we're just going to have to live with it," she told us.

Most contracts list a "do not exceed" price. If it's going to cost more, the company must give you a written contract amendment before they leave with your items. If they don't, in Texas, it's a contract dispute that you'll have to sue over. But California goes a step further. There, it's a criminal violation.

KTVU Reporter: "If the carrier wants to charge more for whatever reason, and withholds the delivery of the merchandise, is that legal?"
Julie Halligan, CA Public Utilities Commission: "That's not legal, no."

Police here in Texas say their hands are tied without change from state lawmakers.

"If people contact their state legislator, and press the issue, then it's possible it can be looked at," said Sgt. Stresing.

Meantime, Leah Casey is still unpacking what's left of her belongings. She'll spend months repairing and replacing them.

If you end up in court, go to small claims court if all your belongings are worth less than 10 thousand dollars. Otherwise, you'll have to go to civil court.

After Jimmy Fallon, Is Kevin Rose's Buddy Act Over?

By Owen Thomas

Did you hear? Digg founder Kevin Rose was on Late Night withJimmy Fallon Wednesday. As was Rose's forgettable Diggnation cohost — what's his name? Ah, yes — Alex Albrecht, who we hear wants out.

Rose is a geek hero, famous first for his stint hosting a tech-focused TV show on Comcast's G4TV. Diggnation, an online video show where Rose and Albrecht drink beer and discuss popular headlines on Digg, Rose's social-news site, is the centerpiece of Revision3, Rose's online-video startup. Appearing on broadcast TV, though, is a high-water mark for this icon of geek culture.

While Rose has a burgeoning mini-media empire which has won him magazine covers, Albrecht has languished in relative obscurity — the "blond guy," as Fallon called him.

Which is why when we heard that Albrecht wanted out of his contract, we didn't dismiss the rumor out of hand. As lucrative as the Diggnation gig must be for what is, let's be honest, an excuse to drink in front of a camera, Albrecht could well be frustrated at being Rose's sidekick. (The job does have one perk, though: The ability to say scathing things about Rose and get away with it. Rose is a famously prolific dater whose brief entanglements have included egoblogger Julia Allison and L.A. TV personality Shira Lazar. Albrecht's comment at a party: Rose "has basically plowed through everybody.")

We asked Revision3 CEO Jim Louderback, who was also up late, what gives. "His agent hasn't complained to me," Louderback said. "Sounds like posturing." Posturing? You mean, the kind of crick one gets from perpetually playing second fiddle?

After eco-friendly bulbs and cars, wondering what more you can do to help the planet? Well, go green between the sheets. Now, make your sex life 'greener'

Here are 8 ways to make your sex life a little more eco-friendly:

Eco-lingerie: Slippery and stylish, eco-undies and other fine undergarments are now made of hemp silk, organic cotton, bamboo, and other renewable fibers.

Bamboo sheets: Make over your bed with silky bamboo fabric. These eco-friendly, luxury sheets come from a renewable source and are usually grown without pesticides and harsh chemicals.

Sustainable wooden paddles: Coco de Mer makes top of the line sustainable wooden paddles complimented with fair-trade leather wrist cuffs.

Local flowers: Try to use locally grown or seasonal flowers when wooing your lover. They're right there and don't require using as many fossil fuels by coming from miles away.

Organic lubricants, vibrators: Companies are starting to make lubricants free of parabens and petro-chemicals, like Babeland Naturals Organic Lube. Sex toy industry has also started to make vibrators out of elastomer, a latex-free material that doesn't contain phthalate - which can cause birth defects.

Environmentally friendly condoms: Consider using the sheepskin condom, for it is biodegradable.

Judicial Watch Uncovers Documents Detailing Pelosi's Repeated Requests for Military Travel

House Speaker Issued Unprecedented Demands for Military Aircraft and Wasted Taxpayer Resources with Last Minute Cancellations

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that it has obtained documents from the Department of Defense (DOD) detailing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's multiple requests for military air travel. The documents, obtained by Judicial Watch through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), include internal DOD email correspondence detailing attempts by DOD staff to accommodate Pelosi's numerous requests for military escorts and military aircraft as well as the speaker's last minute cancellations and changes. The following are a few highlights from the documents, which are linked in full below:

In response to a series of requests for military aircraft, one Defense Department official wrote, "Any chance of politely querying [Pelosi's team] if they really intend to do all of these or are they just picking every weekend?...[T]here's no need to block every weekend 'just in case'..." The email also notes that Pelosi's office had, "a history of canceling many of their past requests."
One DOD official complained about the "hidden costs" associated with the speaker's last minute changes and cancellations. "We have...folks prepping the jets and crews driving in (not a short drive for some), cooking meals and preflighting the jets etc."
The documents include a discussion of House Ethics rules and Defense Department policies as they apply to the speaker's requests for staff, spouses and extended family to accompany her on military aircraft. In May 2008, for example, Pelosi requested that her husband join her on a Congressional Delegation (CODEL) into Iraq. The DOD explained to Pelosi that the agency has a written policy prohibiting spouses from joining CODEL's into combat zones.
Documents obtained from the U.S. Army include correspondence from Speaker Pelosi's office requesting an Army escort and three military planes to transport Pelosi and other members of Congress to Cleveland, Ohio, for the funeral services of the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones. Pelosi noted in her letter of August 22, 2008, that such a request, labeled "Operation Tribute" was an "exception to standard policy."
The documents also detail correspondence from intermediaries for Speaker Pelosi issuing demands for certain aircraft and expressing outrage when requested military planes were not available. "It is my understanding there are no G5s available for the House during the Memorial Day recess. This is totally unacceptable...The speaker will want to know where the planes are..." wrote Kay King, Director of the House Office of Interparliamentary Affairs. In a separate email, when told a certain type of aircraft would not be available, King writes, "This is not good news, and we will have some very disappointed folks, as well as a very upset [s]peaker."
During another email exchange DOD staff advised Kay King that one Pelosi military aircraft request could not be met because of "crew rest requirements" and offered to help secure commercial travel. Kay King responded: "We appreciate the efforts to help the codel [sic] fly commercially but you know the problem that creates with spouses. If we can find another way to assist with military assets, we would like to do that."
Speaker Pelosi came under fire in 2007 for requesting a 42-seat Air Force carrier to ferry the Speaker and her staff back and forth between San Francisco, CA and Washington, DC. Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert was allowed access to a 12-seat commuter jet for security reasons after the events of 9/11.

"Taken together, these documents show that Speaker Pelosi treats the Air Force like her personal airline," said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. "Not only does Speaker Pelosi issue unreasonable requests for military travel, but her office seems unconcerned about wasting taxpayer money with last minute cancellations and other demands."

The Pallbearer

Ok, so this is a movie I recently watched and I absolutely LOVED!

The Pallbearer is a 1996 film starring David Schwimmer, Gwyneth Paltrow, Toni Collette , Michael Vartan, Michael Rapaport and Barbara Hershey.
[edit]Plot

The Pallbearer is a dark comedy about Tom Thompson (David Schwimmer), a 25 year old man who sleeps in a bunk bed and lives with his mother. One day Tom is contacted by an old high school classmate's mother, Ruth Abernathy (Barbara Hershey), to tell him that his "best friend," Bill Abernathy, committed suicide, and is asked to give a eulogy at the funeral. Tom does not remember her son, but out of sympathy attends the funeral as a pallbearer and accidentally begins a relationship with Bill's needy mother. While Tom struggles to remember her son, the two develop a romance. Meanwhile, Tom's unrequited high school crush (Gwyneth Paltrow) re-enters his life.

What is PIFTS.EXE?

So after a mysterious PIFTS.EXE program hits the Kaspersky firewall asking to connect out from one of our machines, I hit the Internet to find that nobody knows, but the world is wondering. According to Google Trends, it has been hovering between the 15th and 25th most frequent search for the last couple of hours. Various theories about PIFTS.EXE appear to be emerging: was it some component of Norton Antivirus that went wrong? Is it some mad terrorist plot to wipe the Internet off the face of the earth and thus prevent people from finding out about why Lil' Kim went to jail?

We sit with baited breath...

There is virtually no information on the internet yet regarding a mysterious program called PIFTS.exe, aside from what's posted on this blog. Symantec, makers of the bloated Norton Anti-Virus software, are deleting any mention of PIFTS.exe from their community forums.

The topic is being discussed at forums.zonealarm.org.

UPDATE (02:36 10 March 2009):
A google search for PIFTS.exe turns up a link to www.kanzlei.biz/uploads/tf/index.php?family-guy-season-7-episode-8/, a nefarious looking website that I suggest you not go to unless you know what you are doing. The site contains javascript which may be malicious. Here's a screen capture from one of the pages on that site.

UPDATE (03:56 10 March 2009):
In our comments, thepipermethod says the kanzlei.biz website is just mirroring key words from google trends, which at this time includes the terms "PIFTS" and "EXE" and that the site has no other relation to PIFTS.exe.

At zonealarm.org, one person reports talking with various representatives of Symantec for two hours without receiving any answer as to why inquiries posted on the Symantec forums were being deleted. The caller was told that PIFTS.exe is part of Symantec's update installation process, was denied any further information regarding the purpose of the file and was repeatedly transferred to a new representative when asking why inquiries about PIFTS.exe were being deleted from Symantec's forums.

CSUN area - renewed fears about safety

NORTHRIDGE - Already stuck with the reputation for being one of the Valley's most dangerous crossing zones for foot traffic, the area around CSUN's sprawling campus added one more fatality Monday to a growing list of pedestrian casualties.
The death of a 60-year-old woman, who was struck just moments after stepping into a crosswalk at Zelzah Avenue and Lassen Street at dawn Monday, renewed concerns among residents who are working to make the area safer.
"It may have happened in years past, but this time around it certainly seems more concentrated around CSUN," said Steve Patel, president of the Northridge East Neighborhood Council.
"I don't know if more people are walking now or riding their bikes. These accidents are disturbing and alarming."
In the last six months, cars have struck seven pedestrians on streets near the 356-acre campus - killing two, leaving another two with life-threatening injuries and injuring three others.
The latest victim was Victoria Santos of Panorama City, who died at 6:40 a.m. while trying to cross Zelzah Avenue.
A pickup truck driver traveling east on Lassen Street had turned right onto Zelzah as the light turned green when he hit Santos, said LAPD Officer Ana Aguirre.
The man pulled over and called 911. He told officers that he didn't see the woman in the crosswalk, Aguirre said.
The high frequency of crashes between cars and pedestrians is characteristic of the dense,

54-square-mile area of the San Fernando Valley known by the LAPD as the Devonshire area. In 2007, the area had 88 such accidents, a 21 percent jump from 2005. The West Valley area also had a 21 percent increase in the period, but the next-highest area was North Hollywood, with just an 8 percent increase. The Mission and Foothill areas saw a decline.
Home to wide boulevards, fast-food outlets and tens of thousands of students and residents, the area around California State University, Northridge is ripe for pedestrian versus auto collisions. Add cell phones to the mix, and you have extremely dangerous conditions, said Anne Glavin, chief of CSUN's public safety office.
"We see it all the time - pedestrians on cell phones walk off the curb without looking and into the street with oncoming traffic," Glavin said. "Then you also see drivers on cell phones."
The Northridge East Neighborhood Council wants to do more than educate residents about the high number of pedestrian-related accidents around the campus, Patel said. The group is looking into the costs to install crosswalks with flashing lights, which the city of Glendale has adopted in several areas.
The Los Angeles Department of Transportation is also getting involved. To alert motorists to their speeds near CSUN, the department is installing two digital feedback signs that flash drivers their speeds. The signs, paid for by federal grant money, will go up on Devonshire near Zelzah Avenue and Balboa Boulevard, said department spokesman Bruce Gillman.
In addition to Santos, the following people were struck by cars near CSUN over the past several months:
Olivia Almalel, 33, suffered several spinal injuries after being intentionally plowed down on Dec. 25 by a car that struck her from behind and threw her 35 feet as she crossed Reseda Boulevard near Devonshire Street.
Three men in their 20s were seriously injured Dec. 12 when a car hit them during rush hour at Louise Avenue and Roscoe Boulevard.
Yao Lu, a 22-year-old exchange CSUN student from China, was in a coma for eight days and suffered internal bleeding after being mowed down by a hit-and-run driver Nov. 3 at Reseda Boulevard and Superior Street.
Another hit-and-run driver killed Johoney Lobos, a 19-year-old CSUN student, on Sept. 23 as she crossed the 10300 block of Lindley Avenue near Devonshire Street. Police caught the 42-year-old driver and charged her with gross vehicle manslaughter while intoxicated and fleeing the scene.
After 74 traffic accidents were reported in and around the campus perimeter in 2006, community outcry forced the school to launch an educational and enforcement campaign targeting motorists and creating safety hazards for pedestrians.
The school's specialized safety program is launched several times a year, with signs flanking the campus alerting motorists to focus on the roads and for pedestrians to use crosswalks.
"This is not a new phenomenon," said Glavin. "I've been at CSUN for seven years, and there have always been these kind of issues in this area."

Bon Jovi helps Bridges of Peace

Jon Bon Jovi did more than entertain some of his biggest fans in his hometown last week. He helped a local charity, and in turn, children in wartorn Iraq.

Bon Jovi, along with his Backstage with JBJ fan club, sponsored a drive for the borough based Bridges of Peace organization and its "Help a Child Through a Soldier" drive at his private fan club concert at the Starland Ballroom Feb. 23. The drive was a huge success due to the support of Bon Jovi, his brother Matt Bongiovi and the fan club, according to the charity organization.

In an effort to encourage the fans to give to Bridges of Peace, Jon Bon Jovi donated a personal item to be raffled off. Winner Katrina Van Horn received a black Dolce & Gabbana Vneck shirt owned, worn and signed by the rock 'n' roll superstar.

Fans gave thousands of items to Bridges of Peace, filling an entire U-Haul truck with soccer balls, toys, sports equipment, art and school supplies, and other children's goods. The drive had Bridges of Peace volunteers packing about 60 giant boxes for several days for shipment to children in Iraq.

The boxes were shipped the next day to U.S. soldiers stationed in Iraq. The soldiers are with the same U.S. Army Civil Affairs unit as Sgt. Robert Bruce, who returned home to Sayreville in mid-November after spending a year in Iraq. Bruce is also Sayreville police officer and a Bridges of Peace board member.

The Bridges of Peace board extended its thanks to Jon Bon Jovi, Matt Bongiovi, who oversees the fan club, and the fans for their support of the drive.

"By everyone's participation, we are able to build Bridges of Peace together, said Bridges of Peace President Diane Eleftheriades of Sayreville. "We look forward to the soldiers receiving the gifts and giving them to the children. We hope it brings them happiness, as I really feel all children deserve happiness in this life."

A documentary-type video on the drive has been posted on the YouTube website. The video features "Toys for Peace," a song co-written for the charity by legendary folk musician Pete Seeger and folk artist Ray Korona.

Kelly Rowland, Rihanna and Paul Pierce for "One for Jasmina" campaign.

Celebrities singers Kelly Rowland and Rihanna and NBA star Paul Pierce are helping get the word out to help a 6-year-old New York City girl Jasmina Anema who has a rare and deadly form of leukemia. The organized help campaign is called One For Jasmina. So have strangers on twitter, retweeting the following message:

“Cute kid needs bone marrow transplant Chris Wilcox holding Bone Marrow Donor Drive 03/07 in Manhattan. Pls RT #NYC #USA”

Jasmina Anema’s best chances for beating the disease is a bone-marrow transplant. Jasmina is adopted so the option of family members as donors is not there. People can help to spread the world with One For Jasmina campaign.

This Saturday a bone marrow drive is being held for Jasmina in hopes of finding a match.

Jasmina’s mother, Theodora Anema, is hoping thousands of people show up.

The One for Jasmina Web site (oneforjasmina.com) has information about the donor drive, as well as how to become a donor by requesting a simple kit.

If you would like to become a bone marrow donor:

* You need to be between the ages of 18 and 60 years.

* You need to meet the health criteria. Persons with conditions such as HIV, insulin-dependent diabetes, hepatitis and autoimmune diseases are generally excluded.

* While there is no minimum weight requirement, there is a maximum. The maximum acceptable weight would be a person's weight associated with a body mass index (BMI) of 40.

* If you are part of a registration drive, then often the sponsor of the drive will cover the costs. If no, then you may be asked to pay for the tissue typing (approx $52).

Nicole Murphy and Michael Strahan?

Meet Nicole Murphy, an ex-model who has been dating former Giants footballer Michael Strahan for quite some time. Murphy and Strahan called it quits recently after the guy caught Nicole cheating on him, with the help of some high-tech gadgets. See photos, video and a biography of Nicole Murphy here.

Nicole was cheating on the footballer for some time now and Michael surely had the clue. Her secret lover is Universal Records A&R exec Demetrius Spencer and Michael knew exactly how to catch her red-handed. So he got a tracking device installed in her car. Now, problem occurred when Nicole found out about the bug in a garage. The couple called it off after that.

Using the excuse of “business trips,” a source said, Spencer and Murphy would jet off to exotic getaways in the Caribbean and Mexico. Murphy also began to suspect Strahan was checking up on her. There were “too many instances where he knew where she was,” said a source.

Although, Nicole now regrets the situation as she says that Michael had become very close to her kids from a previous marriage.

As a biography, Nicole Murphy is a former top model and has been an actress too. She acted in the 2002 movie Personal Velocity.

She came to the limelight after her marriage with actor and comedian Eddie Murphy. The couple have five children and they broke up around three years ago. She started dating Strahan in November 2007 after they met in a charity fundraiser event.

“When I got divorced, I said never again,” Nicole Murphy told PEOPLE just 20 days ago. “But some time has passed since Eddie and I split, and I know now what I want in a man: communication and shared interests. Michael and talk about everything, and we both love to travel, explore and laugh.”

This lady sure has a soft corner for everyone! She still likes Eddie, can’t be away from Strahan and loves vacationing with Spencer.

Nicole and Strahan were supposed to take a trip to Africa this month, but I guess that might never materialize now.

The new Barbie - Tattoos like it or not

I have to laugh at the amount of controversy theTotally Stylin' Tattoo Barbie" is causing. After all it is nearly impossible to go anywhere these days without seeing a tattoo. I’m pretty sure every single child has seen one at a grocery store, the Mall, the beach or yes, even at church.

Really, does anyone honestly believe that having their daughter (or son) play with theTotally Stylin' Tattoo Barbie" is going to make them wait 12 years (the legal age is 18 to get one) and run out and cover themselves in tattoos? I would bet the reality of that possibility is no higher than that same child becoming a Doctor simple because they played with Doctor Barbie!

Totally Stylin' Tattoos Barbie" comes with a set of body art stickers that can be placed anywhere on Barbie’s body. It also comes with a tattoo gun which allows kids to stamp designs on themselves: all of which are temporary and easily wash off. Oh the horror of it all - It isn’t as if kids don’t already stick stickers or temporary tattoos on themselves!.

Mattel actually launched its first tattooed Barbie about 10 years ago, with some retailers pulling the dolls from their shelves after parents complained. Personally, I find the all the Bratz dolls a lot more controversial than the Tot than the Totally Stylin' Tattoo Barbie" and really can’t see what the big deal is.
